Farming Guided Writing

Writing can be intimidating for young learners. Help make it fun with this farm themed writing pack. Start by introducing what a farm is with an informational farm handwriting page.

Then teach farm vocabulary and practice handwriting while writing animal names, animal sounds, fruits, vegetables and foods. Then use the guided writing page and โ€œword siloโ€ to help guide your students to writing their own sentences about what they learned. Also includes a blank writing template for more advanced writers.

Farm Tour

The next best thing to going to an actual farm is to do a digital farm tour. Enjoy this fun half an hour tour by Blippi.

Tour a flower farm and make a bouquet, learn about planting seeds and check out some farm animals. Easy way to get a feel for what a real farm is like.

LEGO Farm

Learn through play! We love LEGOs and try to build a scene to match all our themes. We pulled this farm scene together with whatever LEGOs we had on hand. Cinderellaโ€™s horse fit right in!

I did find this great Duplo Farm LEGO set that would work great for a farm unit if you donโ€™t already have enough pieces.

English Language Arts - CVC Words Focus

Pumpkin CVC Word Builder

Practice building CVC words with these fun printable pumpkins and wheelbarrow mat place mat.

Corn Sight Words

First, practice sight word recognition with these Corn Sight Word Flash Cards and Corn Harvest Game. Use the flash cards as part of the game, a literacy center or include in a sensory bin. They are designed to easily fit in a milk carton (corn silo) as part of sensory play.

Once they are familiar with the words, have them practice building the words with the Popcorn Bag Play Mat, Popcorn Letters and Popcorn Sight Words Flash Cards.

Then, assess and track student's progress with the Corn or Popcorn Flash Cards and tracking sheet. Have your students color in the star for each word that they know.

Reading Lessons

There are only two resources I like to make sure I include on each weekโ€™s lesson plan, Prodigies Music (below) and Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This book has thousands of 5 star reviews on Amazon for a reason. Itโ€™s an effective, no-prep way to teach reading. We are 30 or so lessons in and I can already see a difference, my daughter actually sounds out the words instead of guessing.

The lessons are short (15-20min), easy to grasp and sequential. The entire lesson is scripted and color coded so itโ€™s fool proof, just read the words in pink. It also is designed for kids that donโ€™t know their alphabet or letter sounds yet, so you can start right away. Their claim is that after completing all 100 lessons your child will be able to read at a 2nd grade level!

Math - Addition Focus

Main Thumbnail.jpg

Farming Story Problem Cards

Teach and test foundational math facts with these farm themed story problems. Use the tracker to assess students fluency with Combinations of 10, Addition Within 10 and Addition Doubles. Also includes blank equation cards for your math center.

Vegetable Harvest Ten Frames

This has been the most played with sensory activity Iโ€™ve come up with so far and itโ€™s a great opportunity to teach math! My five and almost two year old have played with this for hours. They love taking the peas out of the pea pods and โ€œshuckingโ€ the corn. We had so much fun building a trellis for the peas and stalks for the corn out of popsicle sticks.

Then during Math time. we used the egg carton ten frames to work on number pairs for ten. We used the erasers to form the equations in the egg cartons, then wrote them all on the white board to see the reversals and patterns. We even tried a few simple multiplication problems with the pea pods (3x2=6 and 3x3=9). Because my daughter could easily visualize the problem, it was a great introduction to the concept of multiplication.

Base: Boon Lawn Drying Rack and Egg Crates cut into ten frames

Supplies: Vegetable Japanese Puzzle Erasers, Craft Sticks, Green Pipe Cleaners, Glue Dots, and Green Markers.

Art and Music

Beaded Corn

Crafts that work on fine motor skills are always a winner for me. This was a no-prep craft that kept both my 5 year-old and toddler busy.

Just fold three brown pipe cleaners in half and twist. Add your fall pony beads and then twist to close and your corn is ready to harvest!

Supplies: pony beads, pipe cleaners.

Prodigies Music

Doโ€ฆReโ€ฆMiโ€ฆ

We love Prodigies! Prodigies Music is simply an incredible curriculum for teaching music. Ages 2-5 is the critical time to develop a life-long sense of pitch. Their curriculum is designed to develop a sense of pitch with easy to use desk bells that donโ€™t require any tuning. They also teach piano, recorder and ukulele. Their subscription includes everything you can think of 450+ videos, worksheets, free bell mats, sheet music all color coded so itโ€™s super easy to learn. If you donโ€™t have an instrument they have a bunch of rhythm focused content that doesnโ€™t require an instrument.

They have a free trial and discounts for annual memberships! Great deal! You can even check out some of their videos for free on YouTube.

Science

Chicken Life Cycle - STEM Craft

Teach the lifecycles of a chicken with this fun and easy science craft. First, learn about the lifecycles with this one page vocabulary tracing worksheet. Then color the Chicken Life Cycle stages, cut and glue onto the foldable accordion template for your own mini STEM book.

STEM Pumpkin Tower

Pumpkin tower challenge! Design and build your own pumpkin tower out of toothpicks and pumpkin candy. Learn basic engineering concepts and three dimensional shapes.

We used Brachโ€™s Mellowcreme Pumpkins and the candies fell apart so we were only able to make a cube. If we get a chance to do these again, I think Iโ€™m going to use these Sour Jelly Pumpkins.

Mini Vegetable Farm

There is no better way to teach farming than to visit an actual farm. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made field trips challenging. So instead, we planted our own mini vegetable farm. We donโ€™t have a lot of outdoor, space but lettuce is easy to grow on a small footprint. Just plant the seeds in a little seed starter mix (the soil is lighter and makes it really easy to sprout). Water with a spray bottle daily. Then transplant once there are 3-4 leaves on each sprout.

Supplies: Organic Seed Starter, Heirloom Lettuce Seeds, Egg Crate, Craft Sticks and Spray Bottle.

Sensory Bins

IMG_8665.jpg

On The Farm - Sensory Bin

Teach about life on the farm with this fun farm themed bin. I just pulled some green rice I had dyed previously, a bag of lentils from the pantry and voilaโ€ฆwe had a farm landscape. I added these fun wooden figurines I found at a thrift store, some river rocks and these Farm Animal figurines from Wild Republic. I found this awesome Melissa & Doug Wooden Farm Play Set that would be awesome too!

Hereโ€™s the recipe I used for the dyed rice. It worked great and Iโ€™ve re-used the same rice at least a dozen times.

Filler: Dyed Green Rice and Lentils

Recommended Supplies: Wild Republic Farm Figurines, river rocks, plastic lid for lentils, wooden town figurines, nesting cups and wooden scoops.

Physical Education

IMG_4858.jpg

Cosmic Kids - Farm Yoga

Warm up with this fun 12 minute yoga routine. Learn your animal yoga poses while stretching your body. This is geared for younger children, but my five year old loved it and asked to do it again.

Farm Animal - Basic Locomotor Skills Game

This is a fun way to work on the 8 basic locomotor skills included as part of most Kindergarten physical education standards. Just pick a card, roll a dice and everyone completes that action that number of times. For extra fun, say the animal sound while completing the action.
