Corn Life Cycle + Lift-The-Flap Book

We love STEM + Craft activities! Teach All About Corn with this fun Lift-the-Flap book. Your students will learn the parts of the corn plant, part of an ear of corn and about what a crop is. Then they will love getting to choose their favorite corn foods to have for breakfast lunch or dinner.

Next, learn about the life cycle of a corn by sequencing the stages of the corn plant in the correct sequence in this folding STEM Craft.

English Language Arts - Sight Words Focus

Corn Sight Words

This interactive sight word bundle has three resources to help your students practice their sight words.

First, practice sight word recognition with these Corn Sight Word Flash Cards and Corn Harvest Game. Use the flash cards as part of the game, a literacy center or include in a sensory bin. They are designed to easily fit in a milk carton (corn silo) as part of sensory play or used as flash cars for a relay race (see below.)

Once they are familiar with the words, have them practice building the words with the Popcorn Bag Play Mat, Popcorn Letters and Popcorn Sight Words Flash Cards. Then, assess and track student's progress with a convenient tracking sheet.

Reading Lessons

There are only two resources I like to make sure I include on each weekโ€™s lesson plan, Prodigies Music (below) and Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This book has thousands of 5 star reviews on Amazon for a reason. Itโ€™s an effective, no-prep way to teach reading. We are 40 or so lessons in and I can already see a huge difference, my daughter actually sounds out the words instead of guessing.

The lessons are short (15-20min), easy to grasp and sequential. The entire lesson is scripted and color coded so itโ€™s fool proof, just read the words in pink. It also is designed for kids that donโ€™t know their alphabet or letter sounds yet, so you can start right away. Their claim is that after completing all 100 lessons your child will be able to read at a 2nd grade level!

Art and Music

Corn Cob Stamps

What a fun and creative way to learn about texture! This was a super easy and fun craft that even my almost two year old could do.

We husked a couple of corn on the cobs, patted them dry and painted them multiple colors. Then we used the corn cob as a stamp and rolled it back and forth on a piece of cardstock. My girls loved the patterns their corn made on the paper and even how the corn itself looked when they were done.

Supplies: corn, tempura washable paint, baby wipes, paint brushes, tray, white cardstock, paper plates

Beaded Corn

Crafts that work on fine motor skills are always a winner for me. This was a no-prep craft that kept both my 5 year-old and toddler busy.

Just fold three brown pipe cleaners in half and twist. Add your fall pony beads and then twist to close and your corn is ready to harvest!

Supplies: pony beads, pipe cleaners.

Prodigies Music

Doโ€ฆReโ€ฆMiโ€ฆ

We love Prodigies! Prodigies Music is simply an incredible curriculum for teaching music. Ages 2-5 is the critical time to develop a life-long sense of pitch. Their curriculum is designed to develop a sense of pitch with easy to use desk bells that donโ€™t require any tuning. They also teach piano, recorder and ukulele. Their subscription includes everything you can think of 450+ videos, worksheets, free bell mats, sheet music all color coded so itโ€™s super easy to learn. If you donโ€™t have an instrument they have a bunch of rhythm focused content that doesnโ€™t require an instrument.

They have a free trial and discounts for annual memberships! Great deal! You can even check out some of their videos for free on YouTube.

Dancing Corn

By: Little Bins For Little Hands

Love this fun and easy magical dancing corn experiment by Little Bins For Little Hands. This simple acid + base chemical reaction is always a delight for my girls, but watching the popcorn dance as the bubbles lift them made this an extra fun experiment. They love taking turns pouring in the vinegar and stirring it. I think next time, they will each need their own jar.

Supplies: tray, medium mason jar, baking soda, vinegar, water, popcorn kernels.

Popcorn + Salt

By: First Grade Buddies

This was a fun science experiment that we could keep up throughout the week. This is a great way to introduce the concept of a hypothesis.

Add the popcorn and salt to the jar and roll it on the table, have each kid take turns rolling the jar. Ask your students what they think will happen if you tap the jar on a flat surface (Will it stay mixed? Or will the popcorn and salt separate?). Then have them take turns lightly tapping or shaking the jar and see what happens, the kernels rise to the top of the salt. The salt falls around the kernels to leave a nice layer of popcorn kernels on top.

We used this free Popcorn in Salt Printable from First Grade Buddies to draw what happened to the popcorn after we tapped it on a flat surface.

Supplies: medium mason jar, 1 c salt, 1/4 cup popcorn

Sensory Play

Corn Sight Word Sensory Play

I love when I am able to integrate our ELA or Math focus into our sensory play. My daughter instinctively started reading the sight words as she harvested the corn sight word cards and put them in the slot in the corn silo.

Sometimes, the bins are only interesting to my almost two year old, but this one had them both busy for over an hour! They took apart the corn stalks and harvested the corn cobs, popcorn kernels and the sight words and pretended to feed the farm animals corn.

The Corn Silo was super easy to make. I cut the bottom off of an old milk carton so it comes apart and painted it red(tip: paint it white first if you want to hide all the labels). Then I made the Corn Silo label and cut a slot to fit the Corn Sight Words.

I used old mushroom containers to hold the yellow popcorn and used craft sticks and pipe cleaners for the corn stalks. The green colored popcorn was sure easy to make. You can find the recipe here.

Filler: green popcorn and yellow popcorn.

Supplies: vegetable erasers, craft sticks, pipe cleaners, painted milk carton, recycled food containers, farm animal figurines, sight word printables, nesting cups, wooden scoops.

Sight Word Relay Race

This can be done with any type of sight word flash cards, but we used our Corn Sight Word cards.

To set-up designate a starting line and set up two small containers to hold the words. Place the sight words on the other side of the room or yard. You can even set-up obstacles in between to make it extra fun. Then take turns running to get a sight word. You have to read the word correctly to place it in your container. Incorrect words can be put back with the other words to try again.

The person with the most words when you run out of sight word cards is the winner!
